Shops

Beauly (2 miles) has a lovely range of independently owned bespoke shops including its own butchers; bakers, chemist; beauty salon; hairdressers; ironmongers; antiques; several art galleries; 3 gift shops; 2 really lovely women’s cloths shops and the world renowned ‘Campbells of Beauly’ who make and sell all things Scottish including tartans, tweeds and cashmere.

It also has a very well stocked Co-op; a delicatessen; 5 restaurants and 3 local pubs.

The City of Inverness (8 miles) has several Restaurants

Old North Inn - Kirkhill – 1 mile from Bothy (easily walkable) serves Scottish fair in its restaurant and public bar.

The village of Beauly (2 miles from Bothy) offers a good selection of restaurants:

Beauly Tandoori – Really good sit-in or take away Indian food.

Lovat Arms - Traditional Scottish fair within hotel, also has public bar.

The Priory – offers all day fine food from ‘afternoon teas, bar suppers or an A La Carte dinner menu.

Corner on the Square – is a wonderful deli where you can sit-in or take away fabulous coffee, irresistible cakes, olives, wines, cheeses….has a lovely lunch/all day menu. (Shuts at 5pm)

Inverness (8 miles drive) has some really fantastic restaurants - booking for the following will be essential

Café 1, Castle St: Fresh exciting ingredients sourced from the Highlands and Islands – you’re looked after beautifully!

Rocpool Restaurant , 1 Ness Walk: Fabulous ingredients sourced locally, cooked simply - always reliable yummy!

Rajah Indian Restaurant , Post Office Ave – for us, the best in Inverness, always delicious!

Cobbs Restaurant , Loch Ness Clansman Hotel – fantastic food, warm highland reception and amazing view right over Loch Ness.

Day trips

Isle of Skye (90 minute drive from your cottage) - WestOozing with history, castles, whisky distilleries, a dinosaur museum, Gaelic culture and the haunting beauty of the Cullins, a wonderfully full day can be easily achieved by setting off early.

Cairngorm National Park (1 hrs drive from your cottage) - SouthAwarded ‘National Park’ status in 2003, this is a magical area for wildlife, countryside, walking and rambling and boasts the highest mountain funicular railway in the UK. As a day trip you can incorporate a visit to the Highland Wildlife Park, Reindeer Centre and Steam Railway.

Applecross (leisurely 2-3hrs drive from your cottage) – North westCertainly one of the most beautiful routes in the whole of Scotland – you will experience scenery and rock formations that will make you have to remind yourself which country you’re in! A circular route will give you the opportunity to make the most of your day – details will be in your Welcome Pack at the cottage.

Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting & Inflatable RIB Trips

We offer both these sporting experiences to our guests here at Wester Lovat.

You may wish to test your position skills at shooting some clays. This is done from walking distance of your Lodge – all equipment and full safety briefing and instruction supplied throughout duration.

Walks and Cycling

There are several easy woodland walks on your doorstep which will take you approx 1hr.If however you are feeling more ambitious, there are a total of 53 ‘Munros’ in the four neighboring regions.Abriachan is 7 miles from the Bothy giving you access to many beautiful walks and marked trails. The park also offers excellent purpose built mountain bike tracks and obstacles for those looking for an added challenge!

Golf Courses

There are 31 Golf Courses within a 2hr drive of the Bothy with Muir of Ord, Strathpeffer, Inverness and Torvean all within a 15 minute drive.

Aigas is a fantastic 9 hole course just 5 miles away towards Glen Affric, beautiful.

History

Urquhart Castle (10 miles)

An absolute ‘must see’ – one of Scotland’s most iconic images shown throughout the world, this stunning ruin is set in beautifully landscaped grounds offering one of the best views of Loch Ness.

In addition to Urquhart, there are 8 other castles within 2hrs drive – many fully habited with beautiful garden and walks. Guided tours will let you explore the way of life in the 17th and 18th Century.

Our recently refurbished theatre is quite beautiful. Now boasting 3 theatres and a large cinema, there’s always a good evening’s entertainment available to you all year round. There’s a large restaurant where you can incorporate pre show meal.

Jacobite Cruises (8 miles) 5 star cruises on Loch Ness
One of the most popular excursions and a great perspective to see Loch Ness. Boarding at Tomnahurich Harbour, Inverness, Jacobite Cruises leave regularly and will take you up and into Urquhart Castle.

Horse Riding

Chapelton Equestrian Centre (4 miles from the Bothy)
Chapelton is an extremely friendly stable yard that is BHS approved and offers lovely horses and ponies for all ages and abilities wishing to learn to ride.

Highland Riding Centre at Borlum Farm, Drumnadrochit (10 miles) has a fantastic reputation and offer suitable horses and ponies for all ages and ability. Private tuition or a wonderful trek through Loch Ness – which will prove memorable!

Whisky Distilleries

Here in the Highlands, we’re very lucky to have 8 Distilleries / visitor centers all within 1hrs drive of the Bothy with ‘Ord’ being just 4 miles away. Observe the age old traditions of how our national treasure is made. Enjoy guided tours around the various stages of the process and then the good bit…the tasting!

Others include -Tomatin, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenmorangie and Clynlish.

Fishing

We can arrange a half or full days Salmon or Trout fishing on the stunning Beauly River which can be seen from the Bothy. Alternatively a great ½ day’s fishing for salmon and trout from a boat on Loch Ness can be arranged with your personal ghillie, all equipment, boat and pack lunch.
